Small Group Training vs. One-on-One: Which Is Right for You?

If you’ve ever stood at the gym front desk wondering whether to book a small group session or invest in one-on-one personal training, you’re not alone. Both options can deliver real results—but they work through different mechanisms. The best choice isn’t about what’s “better,” it’s about what best fits your goals, personality, and lifestyle.

Small Group Training

(usually 3–10 people) is ideal if you thrive on energy and accountability. You get a coach, a structured session, and the added push of training alongside others. It’s often more affordable than 1:1, so you can train more frequently without blowing your budget. Group sessions are also great for building consistency! When you’ve booked in and your crew expects you there, it’s harder to skip sessions.

Small group training is especially good if your goal is general fitness: getting stronger, improving conditioning, losing body fat, or building a solid routine. You’ll still get coaching and form corrections, but your program may be less individualised than in a private session.

One-On-One Personal Training

The best fit if you want a plan built specifically for you. Your coach can tailor everything: exercises, intensity, rest times, and progressions. They can base it on your body, injuries, confidence level, and schedule. It’s also the fastest way to level up technique because you get constant feedback.

1:1 is a strong choice if you have a specific goal (like a first pull-up, a powerlifting total, post-injury return, or preparing for an event), if you’re new to the gym, or if you prefer privacy and focus.

So, which is right for you?

Choose small group training if you want motivation, community, and value.

Choose one-on-one if you want maximum personalisation, faster skill improvement, or support around special considerations.
