Setting SMART Goals and Achieving Them

How to Set a SMART Fitness Goal

Setting fitness goals is more than just saying, “I want to get fit.” To give yourself the best chance of success, try using the SMART framework:

  • Specific: Make sure your goal is clear and precise.
  • Measurable: Ensure your goal and progress can be measured.
  • Achievable: Your goal should be realistic, and within your resources, tools, and abilities.
  • Relevant: It should be closely connected to what’s important in your life — in this case, your fitness journey.
  • Time-bound: A time-bound goal creates accountability and helps break big-picture goals into actionable steps.

What This Looks Like in Practice

Instead of a vague or big-picture goal like “I want to get stronger,” a SMART goal would be:

“I want to be able to deadlift 100 kg for five reps within the next three months by training three times per week.”

In this version, your goal is clear, trackable, realistic for your current level, meaningful to your overall fitness journey, and has a deadline that keeps you accountable. The SMART framework helps turn fitness dreams into structured, actionable plans.

How to Smash Your Fitness Goals

Once your goals are set, the key to sticking to them is consistency and accountability. Break your bigger goal into smaller milestones, celebrate progress along the way, and stay flexible — you can always adjust if something isn’t working.

Building routines, such as scheduling workouts like appointments, helps make training non-negotiable. Tracking your progress through a training app, journal, or with support from a coach or friend will keep you motivated and focused.

Most importantly, surround yourself with encouragement and a supportive network — whether that’s training with a friend, joining classes, or leaning on your gym community. Exercising doesn’t have to feel like a chore; it should be something you look forward to each week. Choosing physical activity, you enjoy is one of the best ways to stay consistent.

Progress doesn’t happen overnight, but with persistence and the right support, you won’t just hit your goals — you’ll smash them.
